Things I loved on the internet this week: Vol. 3

Alison Pegg

I saw a meme this week saying it already felt like its January 74th - and I just felt seen.

Maybe it’s the state of the news cycle, maybe it’s because we’re in “must check the weather” season, or who knows?, maybe the relaxation of the holidays has worn off - every way you look at it seems like this month is taking its good old time passing by.

Thank goodness for the royals. I hate that the press has branded it “Megxit”, and I hate how intrusive it is to their lives, but since every day brings a new royal development, at least it’s something to look forward to.

That and SAG Awards awarding Parasite, and Brad and Jen (and their reunion!)

Anyways, without further ado - here’s a roundup of the things I loved dished up by the internet this week.

It seems like the Ukranian jet crash has passed through the news cycle here in the states, but at home in Canada, they’re still talking about what a huge blow it was to Canada’s academic community.

Speaking of home, one of my favourite Canadian jewelry designers, Jenny Bird, just came out with her latest Love Collection. I’m currently eyeing the Layla ring and the Helena stud set, they’re the perfect minimalist take on Valentine’s Day jewels.

Speaking of love, this article inspired me to watch Long Shot, I haven’t laughed that loud at a movie in a long time. It’s streaming on HBO Go if you want to catch it, Charlize Theron is a total girl crush.

Leslie’s post about why she’s stopped saving things for special occasions really resonated with me, from beauty products to travel destinations, I often found myself doing the same. Here’s to more living in the moment!

In the spirit of looking ahead, one of my favourite strategy publications, Trendwatching, released their list of top five consumer trends for 2020. It’s a read that really gets you thinking about where we’re going and how far we’ve come.

One of my bucket-list jobs has always been a trend forecaster, and this interview with fashion’s top trend forecaster was fascinating. Trend forecasting is so simple, yet so scientific, all at the same time.

I’ve always relied on Into the Gloss to teach me about the latest beauty science, but they’re editorials are quickly becoming my new fave. Their latest, long sleeves and manicures, is pure visual candy.

I never would have thought that visual and performance art would be part of an album promotion and that’s why I love following what BTS is doing with their latest release. Global in scope and size, I love that it’s bringing art to the masses.

And finally, this weekly linkfest wouldn’t be complete without mention of the royals, first with this look at how unfair the double standards are between Kate and Meghan, and this article detailing just how “normal” Meghan and Harry will be treated in Canada, especially when it comes to immigration.

This has never been more true

A post shared by Lola Tash and Nicole Argiris (@mytherapistsays) on

Oh January.

You start with the hope of a fresh start and some lofty New Year’s resolutions, and then the reality of the first week back at work hit, and well….yeah.

I saw the above post shared all over insta this week - doesn’t it just speak to us all?

In between surviving everything that came with week 1, here are some things I loved on the internet this week.

Starbucks has new drinks out for 2020 - and they’re not full of sugar. I might have to try an oat milk honey latte here pretty soon.

Speaking of plant-based milk, this story has me feeling pretty heartbroken over my almond milk chai tea lattes.

On a lighter note, Brad Pitt has been having a great week. My favourite part? When he told Leo he would have shared the raft.

The Golden Globes were kind of meh this year, and the fashion hits weren’t that great either. There were some pretty spectacular fashion misses though, expertly chronicled by my favorite fashion commentators, Tom & Lorenzo.

Speaking of movies, here are the most anticipated rom-coms of 2020. I already have Feb 12th pencilled in. #peterkavinsky

I love when old fogey institutions contribute to the cultural heritage, so this post by Merriam-Webster cracked me up. The power of the BTS Army is insane!

Wanderlust alert. The New York Times came out with their annual list of 52 Places to Go in 2020. So many dreamy destinations.

I’m not a big drinker to begin with, so I’m loving all of the Dry January recipes right now. This list of 7 non-alcoholic drinks to try looks delicious.

One of my favourite fashion retailers, who’s taste I adore, is out with Part 1 of their Spring Fashion Report. Count me as a fan of bored minimalism.

I loved when hockey stops taking itself so seriously, and this piece on the origins of BarDown is a great example of that.

Things I read on the internet this week: Vol. 1

Just like the randomness of my brain, the internet is filled with a never-ending amount of glorious random things.

Here are a few that caught my eye this week, that you might like.

Baby Yoda was impossible to miss during December, with everyone from NFL teams to stans using the lovable alien in just about everything. This tweet takes the cake for me - Spice Girls forever!

A new year brings new year-long horoscope predictions and this Gemini can’t get enough. I especially enjoyed this one from Wit & Delight, and this one from Mind Body Green (originally shared by Grace).

Loving this decade-end post from Sarah, one of my favourite bloggers/grammers.

As an adult addict of teen tv, I couldn’t help but identify with agree with this article on how adults are watching, sharing and respecting teen tv. Woo hoo!

Love seeing one of my favourite CBJ alumns, Wiz, coaching at my alma mater. Love even more that it’s for the women’s hockey team.

The Ringer’s cultural vertical has become a must-read for me, and this week I caught up on this piece, How Meghan Markle Woke Up the Royal Family.

I’ll always remember the screaming and jumping my sisters and I did when Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal in 2010. Of course, it tops this list of top hockey moments of the decade.

Speaking of Canada, following Justin Bieber’s crusade against Tim Horton’s lids was a hilarious highlight of my winter break. You really can’t take the Canada out of a Canadian….

From sweeping vistas to intimate moments, the power displayed in each of the AP’s Top 2019 photos is awe-inducing.

And finally, my favourite award show of the year is this Sunday, the Golden Globes. (I might have to bring back my mini-insta fashion reviews). Here’s a great preview of who will win, and who should win, in all the major categories.

16 Masculine Candles for your HomeFor the past year, my fragrance preferences have been leaning towards the masculine side and this is a great round-up of scents (and multiple price points) that I love.

Five Resolutions to Simplify your Tech Life. There are many great tech tips articles going around this type of year, but I love this one the best for it’s tips outside of your current device.

Forget Hygge - This is the Scandinavian Word You Should Live By. If hygge is the trendy-word-of-the-year, this one might be next. And this one has a way better translation (and message)

Work & Career

How to Stop Short Term Thinking at America’s Companies. This piece brilliantly explains handcuffs that budgets and dividends put on corporations, cutting into opportunities for real game-changing innovation.

Working with Millennials can be a Challenge. You’ve probably seen this video all over your facebook feed, but in case you haven’t, take a look.

Lifestyle

A Parisian take on the Draping trend. Oh yes, the 80s are back (regardless of what you feel about it). Here’s a way to modernize the 80s sculptural blush look that’s coming back in style in makeup.

Is the matte lip trend on it’s way out? I’m not sure how I feel about this one, while I love a dewy, lush make-up look, I also love my beloved liquid lipsticks.

The Best Masks to Pair with your Garbage TV Shows. I’m including this link because this was the best line I read on the internet this week “The TLC reality show 90 Day Fiancé is a show about love in the same way that an episode of Dateline is about love.”

Clinique’s Latest Chubby Sticks bring a new meaning to Outside the lines. This might be the most genius collab EVER.

Why Does Everyone tell me to take Fish Oil? Blame it on the New Year/New You trend, but an interesting take on vitamins if you’re looking to add them to your repertoire.

Sports

Cabbie Presents: Aaron Rodgers is traded to Canada. Even before No. 12’s amazing throw last weekend, he had another hilarious cameo on Cabbie’s show. Bonus for Olivia Munn paying home to it later!

Get Game Ready with Kris Letang. I LOVE these behind-the-scenes videos with sports stars, and these looks into home really humanize them even more. This video with Kris Letang does just that.

Happy October!

Amid the flurry of news that's coming out right now, there's one thing for certain:  journalists are KILLING it at the moment. Regardless of how you feel about the upcoming election, it's been awesome to see the revival of old-school reporting from this country's trusted news outlets. The political junkie in me can't get enough of all of the critiques and I'm interested to see how it picks up even more as we get closer to November 8th.

But my consumption of words hasn't just been limited to politics this last month, here's a collection of links worth reading that I've enjoyed.

FOOD

The Beers of Oktoberfest || There's no better season than Oktoberfest. Pat from Pat's Pints ranks Columbus' local brews from best-to-worst in this blind marzen/ festbier taste test

Tailgate food done right || If Oktoberfest ranks as the best season, tailgate season is a close second. There's no better tailgate porn that Waiting On Martha's Fall Guide

CAREER

Pocket this for later || Don't we all want to work for ourselves someday? I'm loving this advice from some of NYC's coolest CEOs; it's real, useful and super inspiring.

Keep the best employees || This one really hit home for me with all of the points on the list ringing true. If you're not sure of your current gig, give this one a read.

Ice Cream #GirlBoss || One of my favourite creative blogs interviews my favourite local entrepreneur. Here's Create Cultivate's interview with Jeni Britton Bauer.

BEAUTY

The Fountain of Youth? || Could having acne mean you're likely to age slower? (PleaseBeTrue). This study almost sounds too good to be true.

Metamorphosis || Pony Makeup has some of the most addicting makeup videos on Youtube. But it's her Kylie Jenner transformation that might take the cake - the finished look is a must-see.

FASHION

Black Parade || Yes, yes, yes. I found my head nodding multiple times during Meg's essay on why she wears so much black. (It's totally transformed my wardrobe too.)

Bland Carpet || Blame it on branding or blame it on a lack of risks. Similar to my Emmy's post, this article asks "How Did the Red Carpet Get So...Bad?"

EXTRAS

Know Yourself || Allie's blog is one of my top local faves and her openness about personality and goals in this post is so honest. A great reflection on knowing your strengths and weaknesses.

Exit Interview || A presidential historian interviews an exiting second-term President. We're going to miss President Obama.
